Welcome to Chaplin House, a gracious, comfortable antique-filled bed and breakfast.
Chaplin House was built by Thomas P. Chaplin and his wife, Lise Breazeale Chaplin, in 1892 and remained the home of their children until 1978, when the Dr. Mildred Hart (Dede) Bailey acquired the property. In May of 1995, Jan and John Levy Frederick purchased the home from Dr. Bailey. All of the downtown attractions, galleries, antique stores, gift shops, restaurants and other historic homes are within convenient walking distance.
 A fine example of Victorian architecture, Chaplin House was awarded the Historic Preservation Grant in 1982 by the Division of Archaeology and Historic Preservation. Restoration was completed later that year.
The house was built almost single-handedly by a man named Zeno who worked without benefit of archetechtural drawings or plans. Particularly interesting are the wide gallery, the original fan-shaped gallery floor, and the curved roof of the main entrance to the house.
Reflecting styles found in English homes during Queen Victoria's reign, the wall coverings were researched as to location, date and designs, and derived from originals by William Morris, Christopher Dreser and Augustine Pugin.
The floors are original heart pine, as is the wainscoting in the living room and dining room. The cypress doors connecting all downstairs rooms date from 1892, and have the original hardware. The ceilings are 14 feet in height. Some of the original Chaplin furnishings and art objects remain in the home as well as period pieces that belong to the Frederick and Couvillion families. The second floor of the Chaplin House is available for bed and brealkfast accommodations. The guest rooms are tastefully decorated with antiques, hand made quilts and fresh garden flowers. Guests are invited to enjoy the ambiance of the spacious front gallery, complete with rocking chairs.
Whether early risers or late sleepers, guests may enjoy a full continental breakfast in the guest quarters. Accommodations include a full bath, and a sitting area with color television. A telephone is available upon request.
Chaplin House is available throughout the year, including holidays, for bed and breakfast guests and by appointment for group tours, day or candlelight. Rates vary during holidays and special events.
